Full Worm Moon, March 3, 2026

The full moon over downtown Salem, MA. The city is brightly lit with street lights and the moon glows behind scattered clouds in a dark sky.

It can be hard to remember, with a couple of feet of snow on the ground and many streets in Salem still under parking bans from last week’s blizzard, but new spring energy is just around the corner. The Worm Moon is the last full moon of winter. It marks the time when the earth begins to thaw and earthworms awaken, working their way up to the surface. Here in the Northeast, another name for this moon is the Sugar Moon because it marks the time of year when maple sap is boiled down to make syrup.

This early spring energy reminds my of the Killer’s song Sam’s Town:

I’ve got this energy beneath my feet
Like something underground’s gonna come up and carry me

It’s this hopeful, energizing feeling I look to at this time of year. It’s a time to finalize plans for the garden and to start seeds in my little indoor greenhouse so they can get a head start on the season. It is also a time to prioritize all the things that were put off during the winter so we can take advantage of the better weather on the way.

Reiki can be like those first stirrings of spring, getting the energy flowing again after a period of stagnation. If you’re feeling the need to jump-start your spring, make an appointment and break out of the winter cave.

Lunar Eclipse

Tonight’s full moon is also a total lunar eclipse. We won’t see much of it here in Salem, since it becomes complete right around moonset tomorrow morning, but if you’re up before sunrise, you might be able to catch the beginning. Or not, since it looks like it will be snowing again. I guess spring isn’t quite here yet.

A very happy birthday

Join me in wishing a very happy birthday to my cat, Mr. Alexander Graham Bell, who turns five years old this week. Alex was found as a stray in Swampscott and rescued by the Northeast Animal Shelter. He joined the family in November of 2022 and loves windows, being brushed, and his catnip pickle (pictured).
